DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): The Chicago Southland Community Based Participatory Research Coalition (Southland CBPR Coalition) was founded to develop and test a community-based model for reducing the national crisis of breast cancer mortality in communities of underserved African American women (AAW). The Southland CBPR Coalition, includes community partners from four communities in the Chicago Southland area, three community based organizations (the National Black Nurses Association, Healthcare Consortium of Illinois, Sisters Network, Inc.), and the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing. The Southland CBPR Coalition's initial formative work indicates that mammography adherence is an important health disparity topic for the four underserved communities. Specific aims of this CBPR planning project are to: (1) develop in conjunction with community partners a culturally competent and theory-based educational mammography adherence intervention for non-adherent AAW and determine its acceptability to 40 AAW from the four target communities; and (2) determine the feasibility of the mammography adherence intervention by conducting a pilot study with 10 women from each of the four communities. We will accomplish these aims via a three-phase pilot project using CBPR principles to: (1) develop a mammography adherence intervention to address the health disparity need; (2) use focus groups to assess acceptability of the mammography adherence intervention to AAW; and (3) pilot test the mammography adherence intervention. We expect our process for this formative research to strengthen our coalition and enabling the Southland CBPR Coalition to be poised to conduct a culturally appropriate, scientific intervention study to increase mammography adherence screening and ultimately reduce the breast cancer mortality rates that now plague AAW in the Southland communities. Plans are for this intervention to be diffused throughout the rest of the nation by the National Black Nurses Association and Sisters Network, Inc.
